Canon announces Rebel DSLR, printer, cloud service and upcoming EOS R5

Canon EOS Rebel T8i

Canon U.S.A., Inc. unveiled today the Canon EOS Rebel T8i DSLR, featuring the DIGIC 8 Image Processor, eye-detection in live view, 4K video, 4K HDMI output. It is the first EOS DSLR with vertical video all within a compact and lightweight body.

The compact EOS Rebel T8i camera features:

  • Optical Viewfinder with a 45-point All Cross-type AF System with Face Detect to ensure images are in focus
  • 24 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) Sensor
  • Continuous Shooting at up to 7.0 fps
  • 4K UHD, Full HD up to 24P
  • Equipped with an Approx. 220,000 Pixel New AE Sensor and EOS iTR AF (Face Detection)
  • Fast & Accurate Dual Pixel CMOS AF with Eye-detection (Servo)
  • Vari-angle, 3.0-inch LCD Touch Screen
  • Advanced Control with AF-ON Button and Quick Control Dial
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Connectivity

The EOS Rebel T8i camera body has an estimated retail price of $749.99 and the EOS Rebel T8i kit with EF-S 18-55mm F4-5.6 IS STM lens has an estimated retail price of $899.99.

Canon also announced the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM standard zoom lens. The compact lens is 3.5in (88.8mm) in length and weighing in at 13.9oz (395g) and has a long zoom range starting 24mm wide.

Canon SELPHY Square in Black

Canon also introduced the battery-powered Canon SELPHY Square square format printer. The newly updated Canon Print app SELPHY PHOTO LAYOUT ver. 2.0, lets the user scan a QR code directly featured on the printer and instantly pairs with a compatible handheld device via Wi-Fi. In addition, the app allows users to add stickers, borders and text.

Available in black, white, pink and green, the Canon SELPHY Square printer has an estimated retail price of $149.99*. Additional 20-image paper packs are available for $14.99.

Canon U.S.A. also announced its parent company, Canon Inc., is developing the Canon EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera. The camera will feature a newly designed CMOS sensor and new image processor, along with new state-of-the-art optical technologies, the company says it plans to release seven RF lenses and two RF lens extenders. A preview of the EOS R5 will be on display at the 2020 WPPI Show in Las Vegas.

Canon also announced it will launch image.canon in early April 2020, a new cloud platform connecting select Canon cameras with compatible PCs, smartphones and external web services. The company says image.canon will enhance post-production workflow and provide a new way to experience the joy of photography.

The Functions and Features of image.canon will include:

  • Direct image uploading via Wi-Fi® connectivity
    Beginning with the currently-in-development EOS R5, future Canon cameras equipped with an automatic image transfer function will be able to automatically upload still image and video files in their original quality directly to image.canon via Wi-Fi connectivity and store them for up to 30 days, the company says. When uploading an original image file, a thumbnail file (up to 2048 pixels) will be automatically generated and stored on image.canon. These thumbnail files can be viewed and used, even after the 30-day initial storage period.
  • Long-term storage up to 10 GB
    Users who want to save still image and video files in their original quality after the initial 30-day period can migrate the data to a 10 GB long-term storage space. The image.canon service will also allow the automatic transfer of images to users’ accounts on services such as Google Drive.
  • Social network connectivity
    From the free image.canon mobile app, users can easily post on select social network sites and YouTube as well as share still image and video files.
