NEW YORK, Oct. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — The International Center of Photography (ICP), the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture, today revealed its new cross-platform partnership with Huawei, the third largest smartphone brand in the world. This exciting collaboration celebrates the power of photography and is meant to engage talented imagemakers from around the world in a global dialogue.

The partnership kicks off with the Huawei NEXT-IMAGE Awards, a contest fostering the next generation of photographers, all of whom are using the next generation of tools in the creation and spreading of visual content. Visual creatives from around the world using Huawei mobile phones are encouraged to submit images within seven categories: @All; Me, Myself & I; Hello, Life!; Check-In; Citizen Witness; 3×3; and Timeline. The call for entries ends on November 20; the winners will be announced in late December. A cash award will be presented to the winner. For submission information and other details, go to gallery.consumer.huawei.com.

The second component of the partnership—”Talk In Images”—will launch in early November and creates a global dialogue utilizing smartphone imagery. Focusing on a series of topics, “Talk In Images” embraces the concept of photography as a universal language. This visual exploration and research experiment aims to assess the power of imagery to launch meaningful, socially engaged, and conscientious conversations on a global scale. Through this exchange, ICP looks to consider how people respond to images as a way to analyze the human psyche and discover an arc of images through visual expression.

One week each month, between November and June, the submitted images will be curated and showcased—grouped by themes including food, home, love, work, and more—as part of the ICP Projected program at the ICP Museum (250 Bowery). By day, the work will be presented on monitors inside the Museum; after dark, the images will be “projected” onto the windows of the Museum. For more information about ICP Projected, go to www.icp.org/projected.

“Photography is a universal language that allows millions of us all over the world to communicate, express our creativity, and build bridges between cultures,” says Mark Lubell, Executive Director of ICP. “It has always been our mission to encourage visual literacy, and to reach across generations. We are thrilled to partner with Huawei on this program, and we hope that both the NEXT-IMAGE contest and the “Talk In Images” experiment will demonstrate new ways in which images can be used to broaden our perspective and enrich our lives.”

ABOUT ICP

The International Center of Photography (ICP) is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Cornell Capa founded ICP in 1974 to preserve the legacy of “concerned photography”—the creation of socially and politically-minded images that have the potential to educate and change the world—and the center’s mission endures today, even as the photographic medium and imagemaking practices have evolved. Through its exhibitions, school, public programs, and community outreach, ICP offers an open forum for dialogue about the role that photographs, videos, and new media play in our society. To date, it has presented more than 700 exhibitions and offered thousands of classes at every level. ICP brings together photographers, artists, students, and scholars to create and interpret the realm of the image. Here, members of this unique community are encouraged to explore photography and visual culture as mediums of empowerment and as catalysts for wide-reaching social change.
