Digital camera household penetration is at 55%, according to CTA

A recent study from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) shows, for the first time, the three most frequently-owned tech products are screen-based devices. TVs (96%), smartphones (87%) and laptops (72%) are the three most-used devices, according to CTA’s 20th Consumer Technology Ownership and Market Potential Study.

The digital camera comes in at 55 percent of household penetration, which is no surprise to industry watchers and retailers. This is not necessarily bad news for the imaging industry as a whole, however, when factoring in the number of devices on this list that is actually “cameras.” The smartphone, for example, would not be nearly as popular without the built-in camera, numerous camera apps, and picture-driven social networks. Other imaging devices on the list: tablets, home-security cams and drones. Not listed are action cameras, which are presumably under the “digital camera” category, or VR/AR cameras, which are also presumably a small market segment at this time.
