Meta invalidates image-tagging patent at the Federal Circuit

The social media giant convinced the appeals court the last remaining patent in the suit was abstract and thus not eligible for patent protection, according to the opinion filed. Meta had previously persuaded the US District Court for the Central District of California that four Angel patents—issued to investment banker Mark Frigon, who founded the image-sharing website Sacko.com, which was launched in 2002 as “the Internet’s only searchable online photo albums community. In addition to standard functionality for storing printing, sharing and enhancing pictures, Sacko.com’s patent-pending photo album technology enables users to search and retrieve photos containing specific individuals.”
