Eric Chen, head of immersive media, Facebook

Under the heading of “Pushing the photo and video boundaries,” Eric Cheng, Facebook’s Head of Immersive Media, will discuss his endeavors in VR and other transformative imaging technologies – including drone and light field photography – in a special fireside chat session at Mobile Photo Connect. The world’s premier conference for the mobile photo ecosystem will be held October 25 at the Presidio Golden Gate Club in San Francisco.

Eric Cheng has been at the forefront of some of the most revolutionary imaging technology innovations of our times: A highly recognized photographer and videographer, he is long-time publisher of underwater and drone photography community website Wetpixel, was Director of Photography at light field camera vendor Lytro, Director of Aerial Imaging at leading drone vendor DJI, and is currently Head of Immersive Media (360/VR) at Facebook.

Eric’s remarkable set of experiences gives him a uniquely well-informed insider’s perspective on how technology transforms the ways people capture and share visual content.  He’ll discuss his insights in a lively conversation with Mobile Photo Connect hosts Hans Hartman and Alexis Gerard, during which he will also show some of his most outstanding visual creations.

Eric’s work as a photographer has been featured at the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum and in many media outlets including Wired, Outdoor Photographer, Popular Photography, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Make, ABC, Good Morning America, CBS, CNN and others. His video work has been shown on the Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, and on virtually every news network around the world.  Eric is also the author of Aerial Photography and Videography Using Drones.

He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science from Stanford University, where he also studied classical cello performance.
