Lensrentals top rented photo and video products of 2024 report has some surprises

Leading gear rental site Lensrentals released its annual rental data review, which identifies the most popular gear rented throughout the calendar year. As the company has done for the past several years, the annual report provides some interesting insight into the popularity of brands and products. For example, the five most popular products rented were Canon lenses; indeed, Canon products made up 12 of the top 20 products. The remainder were Sony bodies and lenses.

Compared to last year, there was a greater rental volume of EF mount lenses, compared to RF lenses (See 2023 chart below). This indicates, on a practical level, that the usage of DSLRs is still going strong, even after new camera introductions have been dominated by mirrorless cameras. In 2023, gear rentals were dominated by Canon’s R series of mirrorless cameras. This year, however, saw a resurgence of their DSLRs and EF-mounted lenses.

Nikon is making a resurgence, with a market share change improvement of 21.03%, which is likely due to its efforts to grow the Z mirrorless platform. The increase of DJI is likely due to the increased popularity of drones and action cameras. On the other side, RED cameras – recently acquired by Nikon – showed a precipitous drop,
